As a result of experimenting with new kinds of gameplay, Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach represents the next evolution in the series. Taking what was learned from the gameplay of Sister Location and the Help Wanted VR title, FNaF: Security Breach has players navigate Freddy Fazbear's Mega PizzaPlex. Accompanied by a friendly animatronic for the first time in the series, players need to sneak around many robots staffing the building, as well as a mysterious human antagonist. The game takes place at the current end of the series' timeline, and provides a fan service-laden look at its world.
A new Five Nights at Freddy's means a new cast, and characters are as strong as ever. The Glamrock animatronics have been equipped with almost sentient AI, and provide both a fun crew of mascots and a persistent threat. Vanny, the first openly human antagonist, is an interesting addition, especially as the player delves into her backstory and potential resolutions. Glamrock Freddy in particular is a great ally to have during the stressful stay at the PizzaPlex, and the protagonist Gregory is more defined than those of the past. However, explaining what's going on with him will involve spoilers for Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.

Gregory's Character in Security Breach
After a brief cinematic introduction to the Glamrock animatronics, the player is put in control of a malfunctioning Freddy before Gregory is ejected from his chest. Under mysterious circumstances, Gregory snuck into the Mega PizzaPlex and stowed away to escape the security guard Vanessa, who is gradually revealed to be Vanny's civilian identity. While a lot of Gregory's personal history goes unmentioned, he is undoubtedly a child brave enough to navigate the horrors of the PizzaPlex.
There is a key detail in the one-star ending that lends some clarity to his story. Gregory is strongly implied to be homeless, as the ending where he leaves through the PizzaPlex's front doors involves him going to a cardboard box to sleep. This lack of true shelter leads to Vanny following him out and either capturing or killing him.
It may be that Vanessa brought him into the PizzaPlex in the first place to fuel her serial killing, which would explain why he has no guest ID. Gregory has learned how to take care of himself, and that manifests in defending himself from the homicidal animatronics. He's even willing to lie to Freddy about how he salvaged some of their parts, and is seen operating jumper cables and driving a car in one ending. Gregory's personal history may be unknown, but it's clear he's had a tough life, and it prepared him to stop the mayhem in the PizzaPlex.
How Gregory Compares to Past FNaF Protagonists
Gregory is different from old player characters in a number of ways. Normally, the first-person Five Nights at Freddy's games are simply a vehicle for the player to spend five nights at Freddy Fazbear's Pizzeria (or some equivalent). To that end, they tend not to have defined appearances or a voice. The child protagonist from FNaF 4 only had a simple pixel art design. Gregory actually has concept art showing his face, and he speaks frequently throughout Security Breach. He's also actively navigating the building to escape, putting him at odds with most other protagonists, who could not - or would not - leave.
Compared to the security guards and guests of past games, Gregory has no connection to the in-universe Fazbear brand, and notably dislikes the PizzaPlex. He does share a story similarity with certain protagonists in a couple of endings, as a few have opted to destroy Fazbear's Pizzeria rather than just leave. Though Gregory is brutal to the animatronics attacking him, he is otherwise averse to violence, and is somewhat self-sacrificial in his efforts to uncover the truth behind Vanny and the PizzaPlex. While he had no intention of doing so, Gregory has continued the trend of random staff and guests fighting back the evils that Fazbear Entertainment allows to fester in its halls.
Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach is available now on PC, PS4, and PS5.
